Double Your Warehouse Space with Mezzanine Systems

Your warehouse is full but you do not want to move. Higher rent, logistics costs, operations grinding to a halt… For most businesses moving is a last resort. Yet in most warehouses there is an unused volume : the gap between the top of the racking and the roof.

Mezanin nedir?

A mezzanine systemis an intermediate floor added inside the existing building in steel. It requires no permanent alteration to the building; it can be dismantled, relocated and extended.

In a warehouse 6 metres high, a single mezzanine level almost doubles the usable area. At 9 metres two levels are possible — on the project we carried out for Danone in Tekirdag, three levels across 6,000 m² system was installed.

Where does it help?

• Order picking area: Picking on the upper level, pallet storage below
• Office / changing area: Staff facilities without taking space from production
• Spare parts store: Stock made up largely of small boxes

1. Clear height. The height left after beams, sprinklers and lighting. Aim for at least 2.20 m clear height per level.
2. Floor load (kg/m²). Typically 350–500 kg/m² is enough for storage and 250–300 kg/m² for offices. If a forklift will go up, it is calculated separately.
3. Floor load capacity. The load concentrates at the column bases; if necessary the base plate is enlarged or the floor is strengthened.
4. Fire regulations. Depending on the area and number of levels, additional sprinklers, escape stairs and fire resistant cladding may be required.
5. Material handling method. How will goods reach the upper level? A goods lift, pallet gate or conveyor must be planned from the outset.

Common mistakes

• Setting the column grid purely by structural calculation rather than by the operation. A column in the wrong place makes the forklift route awkward for years.
• Leaving the staircase as an afterthought. Escape distances are limited by regulation, and a staircase added later eats into valuable space.
• Not planning lighting for the lower level. If the space under the mezzanine is left dark, its productivity drops.
• Skipping handrails and the pallet gate. This is the most critical part of workplace safety, and it is mandatory.

In cost terms

A mezzanine is markedly cheaper than moving to a new warehouse or extending the building. And because it can be dismantled, you can take it with you when you move — the investment does not stay with the building.
