Warehouse Racking Safety: Monthly and Annual Checklist
Installed correctly, racking systems work without trouble for decades. Almost every accident has a single cause: damage that went unnoticed. A forklift impact may look trivial at first, yet it can reduce load capacity by as much as 40%. In this article we share the checklist we use on our site inspections.
Monthly visual inspection
Checks the warehouse manager should carry out monthly, requiring no equipment:
- Upright damage: Bending, crushing, flaking paint, rust
- Traversler: Sagging, dislodged safety pins
- Ankraj: Loose or missing anchors
- Load distribution: Pallet overhang, uneven stacking
- Zemin: Cracks around the base plate
- Levhalar: Is the load notice plate still legible?
Damage classification
The three tier approach widely used in Europe works well in practice:
| Seviye | Durum | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Green | No visible permanent deformation | Continue in use, record it |
| Amber | Slight bending (3–5 mm on the upright) | Reduce the load, plan replacement |
| Red | Visible deformation, cracked weld | Unload the bay immediately, do not use until the component is replaced |
Can a damaged component be repaired?
The short answer: no. Straightening a bent upright does not restore the steel’s yield strength; if anything the metal fatigues. The correct approach is to replace the damaged component with a new one of the same series and section. This is why it matters to keep a record of the profile family used on the project.
Six measures that prevent accidents in the first place
- Ayak koruma bariyerleri: The first uprights at the aisle entrance take the most impact
- Koridor sonu bariyerleri: Protects block ends from impact
- Floor markings: Separates the forklift route from the pedestrian area
- Adequate aisle width: A narrow aisle means constant contact
- Lighting: Depth perception suffers in a dark aisle
- Operator training: Most accidents come from haste and habit
Annual expert inspection
Monthly checks can be carried out by your own team, but once a year an inspection by the company that installed the system, or by an independent expert, is recommended. That inspection measures deviation from vertical, anchor torque and beam deflection, and produces a report.
At Rafgrup we provide after sales inspection and spare parts support for the systems we install. If you would like us to assess the condition of your warehouse, get in touch with us.
